Eat Free Pie is an initiative of Des Moines residents to bake and deliver homemade pies to our neighbors in Beaverdale on Thanksgiving Day.
Get Involved Each year, we call on volunteer bakers and drivers to help us collect and deliver homemade pies on Thanksgiving Day to our neighbors, friends and family in Des Moines. We started this project last year (at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic) with the intention of bringing the community together, even as we remained physically separated from our loved ones over the holidays.
Our goal is simple: to remind one another that none of us are truly alone on Thanksgiving Day.
Dust off that apron and roll up your sleeves for a good cause. Bake and donate a homemade pie, and we'll deliver it to a family or individual in Beaverdale who could use a little cheering up this holiday season.
You do not have to bake a pie to become a part of our mission. A small donation will support a local baker who will lovingly craft a pie in your name, to be delivered on Thanksgiving Day to an individual or family in Beaverdale.
Calling all volunteer delivery drivers! Do you have an hour to spare on Thanksgiving Day to help us ensure this precious cargo meets its intended recipients? Bring the whole family, but leave room for pies in the back!
"What should people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” – Kurt Vonnegut
Anyone in Des Moines qualifies, all are welcome.
Claim a Free PieHello there! I'm Kaylee and that's my big sister, Clair. We're Iowa natives, currently living and working in Des Moines. Also, we love pie.
Clair and I launched Eat Free Pie in Beaverdale in the fall of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic forced so many of us to spend the holidays isolated from our loved ones. We hoped that a special delivery of homemade pie could bring a little cheer to our neighbors and friends who would be alone on Thanksgiving Day.
That first year was a beautiful, enriching and empowering experience. We were overwhelmed by the response from our community. Volunteer delivery drivers from all over Des Moines dropped off nearly 40 pies to Beaverdale residents on Thanksgiving Day - and when we were asked if this project would continue, we both knew the answer.
This year, we are proudly supported by the Beaverdale Fall Festival and the Better Business Bureau. We will be expanding into more neighborhoods in 2025. If you'd like to be a part of our organizing committee next year, please contact us. We would love to hear from you!
Thank you for your kind support, and happy holidays!
